4D Plant Design

The advantages of 4D over traditional 2D or even regular 3D are astronomical.

Integration: One Model Drives Everything

The PAC Difference

Most process design companies continue using traditional methods. Drawings are turned out with many different techniques and methods, depending on each company's style and organizational skills. Often this is inefficient and a great source of error.
PAC is different. Our projects are built using a single, 4D model. Our comprehensive model contains all the information about a project. One model drives everything. All dimensions and specifications are contained in our model. All our deliverables are generated from our model. The model can also be used in many other applications, such as walk-throughs, animations and simulations.

What is 4D?

In plant design, 4D is basically a 3D model that has a dynamic link to a database. In other words, the 4th dimension is database information, such as materials, specs, components and equipment. The 4D model is what we also call "smart 3D".

What are the Advantages of 4D?

The advantages of 4D over traditional 2D or even regular 3D are astronomical. All information is stored in a single model which:

  • eliminates duplication errors (only needs input once to change entire project)
  • is readily available to all people in project
  • generates piping isometrics and structural detailing
  • generates Bill Of Materials and cut sheets
  • ties multiple disciplines into one model (eg. structural, piping, equipment)
  • generates drawings with 2D and/or 3D views
  • instantly displays component information
  • allows rapid changes (parametrically controlled)
  • is dynamic (model is always up to date)

4D technology has allowed PAC to greatly increase the output and quality of work.
